Bre4Kout is a simple game written in BASIC V2.0 for the Commodore 64 inspired by Breakout and Arkanoid.

The object of the game is to knock down the wall of colored bricks.

This game runs on real Commodore 64 and various emulators

The game is designed to take up less than 4K RAM.

Which file should I download?

  • Download the BASIC version (bre4Kout.prg) if you want to read the listing to understand how the game was developed;
  • Download the compiled version(++bre4Kout.prg), smoother and funner, if you just want to play.

How to play

The goal of the game is to destroy a layer of bricks by repeatedly bouncing a ball off a paddle against them.

Move the racket left and right to bounce the ball, if the ball falls to the bottom edge of the screen, you lose a life.

Game controls

  • SPACE - Start the game;
  • A - move paddle left;
  • D - move paddle right.

Requirements and running the game

You need a real Commodore 64 or Commodore 128 machine or an emulator to play the game.

The game has been tested on the real Commodore 64 and the VICE emulator.

Nice game and interesting to see that basic code too, thank you. I also added that to my New Games On C64 from January 2024 -video too.

Thank you for your comment, for your download and for your nice video on YouTube! 😀

I really dig the 'noid-like graphics on this one, sadly it has no sound and the basic version is slow as molasses.

With a little polish the compiled version could be quite nice. Without sound it's merely a demo imho.

Grazie, accetto volentieri l’invito! 😀
